SCHOOL EXCURSIONS
AN IMPORTANT ALTERATION
In consequence of information received by tho Education Board last j evening, tho circular, to head teachors and chairmen of School Committees has been withheld, and it has been decided that the scholars from the schools on tho Rolloston to Springfield and Whitcciiffs line shall visit tho battleship on tho 20th :nRt., and not on tho 21st, as previously arranged. Tho scholars on tho line from Omihi to Mina.and north of Waikari, will visit tho ship on the 14th instead of the 21st, and thoso between Phcobe end Parnassus will visit the cruiser on the 13th, and return on the 15th, in place of tho 20th and 22nd. Those in charge of the children aro requested to note that Captain Halsey expects them to ho clear of the ship by noon each day. ASHBURTOX'S PART. A meeting of the committee for arranging for the entertaining of tho contingent of bluejackets who are to visit Ashburton on May 14th ■*«»■ held in tho local Borough Council Chambers last evening (says our own correspondent). , . ~ ! The Mayor (Mr H. Davis) was in the I char. Ho explained what hhd already been done, and said that it was expected that 250 of the bluejackets wero likely to visit Ashtrarton, and that satisfactory arrangements had been made with tho members of the Women a Christian Temperance Union to provide the luncheon arid tea to bo served in the Theatre Itoyal. Mr T. Turtill wroto, stating that he would have great pleasure in presenting a s Ivor cup, to be competed for by tho bluejackets in a bicycle race, and he would also lend a dozen bicycles for tho races. Mr Turtill's offer was accepted with thanks, as was also a donation of £10 from the Ashburton branch of tho Navy League. Mr John Studholme wrote, donating £3 3s'towards the sports prize fund. Mr F. Ferriman reported that Mr Wm. Anderson and others had offered fat lambs as prizes, so that tho winners could havo them sont Homo to their friends. Mir C. W. Purnell, referring to a suggestion that the bluejackets ehouln bring a gun and a gun-train, and a display, said that he understood that tho object of the committee was to entertain tho bluejackets, not for the bluejackets to entertain the Ashburton people. Holiday excursion tickets will be issued at Ashburton for Lyttelton on May 12th, in addition to tho day on which the school parties travel. Thd schools' excursion train will arrive at Lyttelton from Ashbtirton about 10 a.m., and return from Lyttelton to Christchurch about 1 p.m., and leave Christchurch for Ashburton at 3.30 p.m.
At the Kaiapoi Mayoral installation last night, the Mayor (Mr 11. Wylie), in order to show the loyalty and goodwill of the Council, moved: —"That £5 5s be voted to the General Committee." The committee, he said, were in need of funds to entertain the men. Cr. Rinaldi seconded the motion, and in speaking to it. Cr. Etherington remarked that it redeemed the loyalty of the Council. The* motion was carried. The Ball Committee have arranged for a special train to leave Pyne and Co.'s shed for Lyttelton at 2.30 a.m. on the morning after the ball. The President of the Canterbury District Officers' Club, Lieutenant-Colonel Anderson, tas arranged with Captain Hakey. of the H.M.S. New Zealand, for all officers, with their wives and families, to visit the battleship on tho afternoon of the 15th iust.
