AIR DANIEL GUTHRIE.
Another old identity passetl away at Geraldino on Saturday night (says the "Temuka Leader"), in the person of Mr Daniel Guthrie, at tho age of 76. The deceased, who had resided! in tho Geraldino district for about 4C years, was widely known and respected. He waa born in County Clare, Ireland, and left homo for Australia in the year '59, when he was about 20 years of age. The voyago lasted throe months, and tho boat arrived at Melbour.no on Christmas Day. The late Mr Guthrie remained in Victoria farming for three years, and after tho Gairiol Gully rush set in ho came over to New Zealand gold mining for twelve months. Ho then returned to Victoria, and whilo thero married Miss Carew, who survives him as his widow. Shortly after his marriage the deceased returned- to New Zealand and took up a farm at Pleasant Valley, many of his neighbours being Victorian diggers, who originally came from the South of Ireland, He lived in tho Valley for 20 years, and then practioally retired from tho strenuous lite, taking up a smaller farm on the Geraldine Downs, where for 26 years ho spent his time raising cattle and lending money on town and country properties. As a money lender," tho late Mr Guthrie had many dealings with the peoplo of tho district, and many can look back to the start they made from the little bit they "borrowed from old Dan." Tho deceased was quite a character in his way, and could tell many an exciting story of his experiences in Victoria and New Zealand in th© early days. The deceased leaves a widow, but no family. He has also a brother, Mr Michael Guthrie, residing in Geraldine.
