GREYMOUTH HARBOUR.
IMPROVEMENTS PROPOSED
EXPERT ADVICE SOUGHT.
(SPBCIAL TO "THB PRESS.")
GREYMOUTH, January 14
At last night's meeting of the Greymouth Harbour Board, Sir Arthur Guinness moved:—"That in order to further improve the port of Greymouth, so as to allow vessels of large tonnage to enter the harbour, this Board is of opinion that steps should be taken to obtain a report from Mr C. W. Darley. engineer, of New South Wales (in consultation with the New Zealand Marino Engineer-in-Chief) as to tho practicability of improving the Greymoutta Harbour and its prouaore cost, and that the Government he asked to give its sanction to this proposal." Sir Arthur said that it was not necessary for him to point out the importance of looking to the future of the port. The completion of tho Midland Railway and the opening of the Panama Canal would necessitate them looking for fresh fields for exploitation, and fresh, avenues for the disposal of their timber; and coal. There was no doubt that when the railway was completed, a great deal would go over it that now went over the wharf. Mr Darley had, Sir Arthur said, designed the Newcastle Harbour, and occupied the position of Engineer-in-Chief of harbours in New.South-Wales. He lead resigned from that position and was now in London, but was still retained as a consulting engineer. He intended visiting Australasia for a holiday, and would bo in New Zealand next month, so that there would be plenty of timo to ask the Government to sanction hi_ coming to Grevmouth to report on the harbour. He (Sir Arthur Guinness) did not think the Engineer-in-Chief for the Dominion would feel in any way hurt if so eminent an engineer as Mr Darley were aske%»to report, especially as he "would lie in New Zealand in any' case. Other Harbour Boards would *no«donbt take advantage of Mr Darley's visit to New Zealand to eecuro his advice. The expense would not likely be very great. The nfbtion was carried.
