SHIPPING NOTES.
Tho New Zealand Shipping Company's steamer Hurunui arrived at Auckland on ■Sunday, from Glasgow and Liverpool, via Melbourne and Sydney. - She hnd an uneventful passage, and averaged 13i knots ]i*r hour throughout. Captain E. T. Smith, R.X.R., who succeeded the lato Captain «T. I. Forsdick, is in command of the Hurunui, end his officers are:—Chief, Mr A. F. Beaton;" second, Mr W. T. Point: third, Mr C. N. Sayce; fourth, Mr C. Skilliter. Mr W. W. Jenkinson is chief engineer, Mr W. ! Prophot second. Mr A. Davidson third, Mr iW. Smith fourth, Mr J. Salter fifth, ifr L. I Reid sixth; Mr .1. Clark is chief'rc'fngeratj ing engineer, and Mr H. Walker second. Dr. J. Braithwaite is the ship's surgeon, nnd Mr C. Wood chiof steward. After calling at Wellington, tho Hurunui is duo at Lyttelton about the 10th inst., and will subsequently proceed to Dunedin to complete discharging. Cable advices received in Sydney state that owing to dearer coal, tho German-Aus-tralian Steamship Company and the Nordtlentcher Lloyd Company announce that they aro adding- one, one and a quarter, and two marks to the freight rates to Australia for diilerent classes of goods, and there will "be similar increases in the New Zealand rates. According to the Melbourne ."Argus," London freights have advanced 2s'Cd per ton on outward steamers, freights making a total rise for the year of 7s Gd per ton. The Tyser Lino chartered steamer Harpagus, from New York, is to leave Syduey on the 9th inst. for Auckland, Wellington, Lyttelton and Dunedin. She ia due hero about the 24th inst. Mr J. Esplin, who,was fourth engineer on tho Kumara, left that vessel n,t London to Bit for his chief engineer's certificate. Mr.Fitzpatrick has joined'the Mabcno a<3 wircle&s operator in place of Mr E. J. Williams, who hii3 joined the Perthshire in a similar capacity. Mr W. W. Houghton, who wa3 third engineer on tho Aorangi, has passed his examination at Auckland for a chief engineer' 3 certificate. Mr D. McAlpino joined the Maori at Wellington yesterday aa fourth engineer in_ place of M"r F. Howatt. The Fcderal-Shiro Line steamer Kent, from West of England via way porta, ia due j at Wellington thia morning, and is expected to arrive at Lyttelton next Thursday. After completing discharge at Dunedin, tho Kent will be loaded at Now Zealand porta for London, by tho New Zealand Shipping Company.
