(FEOM Orr. OWN' CORRESrOXDEXT.) ■ LONDON, November 16. \ Tho Eigh Comm's-ioncr paid his official visit to Bristol this week, and tho Western City accorded New Zealand's representative a warm welcome. Mr Mackenzie's tour fitted in with the Colston* Bay celebrations, when Bristol docs honour to the memory of one of her great citizens, and the"High Commissioner was the principal guest at the banquet of the Grateful Society, which is the non-paity organisation. Mr Mackenzie had intended going on to Card ff, but unfortunately this part of tho programme had to be cancelled on tho advice of his medical man, the High Commissioner having contracted a chill. The Cardiff visit, however, is only postponed to a more convenient day. Tho Chairman of the Bristol Dock Trust paid a warm tribute when Mr Macke::z'e visited Bristol, to tho character of Sir William Hall-Jones, whom, ho said, they were proud to class as a personal friend. Mr Mackenzie acknowkdged the compliment in a spoech iuil of feeiing. S.r Wiil.am, ho said, had devoted himself with s.ngleness of purposo to forward tho interests enj trusted to him. Matthews, M.A.. the newlyapi ointed classical master at Christ's College, Christchnrch, has taken his passage by the Arawa, wii:ch is to sail on J;mu~ry 2nd. Educated at Shrewsbury College, Mr Matthews went on to Cambridge as a sctiolar of Pembroke College; it was here that he graduated and was placed in Class i. of the Classical Tripos of 1907. In his student days at Shrewsbury School, Mr Matthews was in the cadet corps, but since then ho has had no opportunity of working in school corps, though at St. ' Peter's, York, he is responsible for the miniature riflo club. At sports and games of all kinds he is very keen. Of cricket ho is especially fond, and he has played hockey for Berkshire County. Tho new British Agent at Tonga is Mr H. E. W. Grant, now Colonial Secretary at the Leeward Islands. Mr Grant is a member of a well-known Barbadian family, and ho entered the colonial servica in his nativo island in 188£. His record, which is described as "a wonderful one," includes Venezuela, Bnham"s, Trinidad. Gold Coast. Falkland I.lands, Britiih Honduras, and Leeward Islands; in the last-named colony he has several times administered tho Government. It was under Sir Sweet Escott, the new High Commiss'oner for tho Western Pacific, that Mr Grant served in tho Leeward Islands, so ho will again come under tho orders of his old chief. At tho Brcmpton Oratory on the afternoon of Thursday, the marriage took; place of Miss .Bertha-Clifford, second daughter of Mr Walter L. Clifford, late of jFaxbourne, New Zealand, to Lieutenant lan C Sbirriff Hilton, R.N., of. H.M. Torpedo-boat No. 20, eldest son of Mr C. Shirriff Hilton, of 41 Roland Gardens, London. The b-ido, who arrived in EngLind in June, and who was given away by her father, jwas in a weduing gown of silver embroidered ninon over white satin; the Court train was of white velvet. The bnuesmaius were three children —Miss Aroi-.a Clifford (sister of the bride), Miss Rosamond Clifford (her cousin), and Miss Joan Balston (niece of the bridegroom). They were in spotted met and lace over pale blue silk, and wore mob caps to match. The ceremony was performed , by the Rev. Father Cator, and Lieutenant E. G. Moms, R.N., was the best man. Among the Now Zealand guests present at Mie ceremony were Mrs Grace, Mis J. D-uncan, Mr and Mrs Michie, Mrs Fairfax, Fen wick, Mr Martin Tweed, Mr and Miss Humphreys, Miss Prins, Colonel Wood and Mrs Wood, Captain R. Ssddon, the Hon. Sydney Joicey. A largo number of presents were received from New Zealand and English friends. After spending the honeymoon at Eastborne, Lieutenant Shirriff Hilton and M rs Hilton will go to Shcerness,, which is to be.their future home. ~r . Mr Philip H. Cannon and Mr Cyras Cannon, (Heathcote, Christchurch) intend to leave shortly for America, on their way to New Zealand, after a tour of England, Scotland, and the Continent. Mr 31. H. Cannon purposes staying in Europe for some time to gain further'engineering knowledge. Cambridge University has conferred thf degreo of Master of Arte upon Hugh Stewart, of Trinity, who has been appointed Professor of Classics at Canterbury College. . The latest list of M.A.'s issued from Oxford contains the name of «W. G. Parkinson, of Keble College. The War Office notifies that Colonel E. S. Heard is to bo a General Staff officer, Ist grado, while employed as Chief of the General Staff oi the Dominion of New Zealand. Miss Freeman (Girton College, Ohristchurch), who came to England largely on account of her health, is now a good deal better, and is thoroughly enjoying her visit. In addition to making herself conversant with many parts of London known in art and literature, she is also employed in visiting schools an { colleges and noting the latest ideas and improvements in educational methods. Mrs Cross (who is Miss Freeman's travelling companion) was taken ill when she arrived in London, and was obliged to go to a nursing homo for special treatment. Lately she has been better again, and has returned to town; she has been making after-dinner speeches, and invitations have been extended to her to speak at various meetings. Before long, Mrs Cross will go to Russia on a visit to relatives; and later she will spend some time in Italy and France. Mr A. V. B. Bishoo and his sisters, tho Misses M. A. ami K. E. Bishop, have been touring in the British Isles since tho early spring. They have planned to spend the winter on the Continent, and are now putting in a short stay in London, en route for tho Sunny South. Mr Charles Young (Christchnrch) has been travelling in India and Ceylon. Hβ has now reached London, and contemplates a stay of three months in the pnited Kingdom. This year the' Rugby team of the London Hospital is captained by an '/Old Boy" of Wanganui College, W. C. HartEiU. One of the backs is S. E. V. Brown, of South Canterbury. Recently-elected x- ellows of the Royal Colonial Institute have included the following New Zealanders: —Mr Frederick G. Gibson, Mr A. Kaye, and Mr George Shirtcliffe. Mrs Howlett obtained her teacher's certificate in 1904, and since then lias been under the London County Council. She will leave for New Zealand early in the New Year.
