POST OFFICE SITE AT OXFORD

. DEPUTATION TO THE HON. D. BUDDO. A deputation mot tho Hon. D. Buddo on Saturday at Oxford regarding tlie proposed site of the new post office at Jennings's corner, pointing out that when the chief postmaster visited Oxford he favourecf the old police station site near Parish's corner, and tho present proposal was 50 chains from that point. Tho deputation took strong exception to tho Jennirgs's corner site, and wished to withdraw their petition to retain tho post office at the railway station, and submitted an offer of a site near Parish's corner which, they stated, was commercially more centrally situated, and asked Mr Buddo to forward their petition to tho PostmasterGeneral with a request that the post office bo orected near Parish's corner.

In his reply, Mr Buddo undertook to do so, and took occasion to comment on the statements contained in anonymous letters to tho papers, in which it was stated That" he (Mr Buddo) was using his political influence to have the post office buile near a targe trading institution of which ho was a directoi, and was conniving with tho Hon. R: Heaton Rhodes (who was believed to bo a largo shareholder) to spend public money to benefit a private concern. Tho statement had not a shadow of truth to support-it. Tho Hon. R. Heaton Rhodes held 12 shares, valued at £24 and probably knew nothing at all abcut tho agitation regarding the post office site, while the staff of tho institution referred to had been requested by the general manager to abstain from taking; an active part in an? movement having for.' its * ; 6bject pubh '■ services. As far as he (Mr Buddo) was concerned ho had discussed the subject with no one, which, in his ooinion, was entirely a local question. He truste-1 this explanation would set al rest tho wild statements current which hv had referred tc.
