BOXING.

MEHEGA.S BEATS WATtD. United Pres* A-_oeiatio„—-By Electrio Tele;_r_p_—Copyright. LONDON, November 25. Mehegan. the Australian boxer, defeated Ward in twenty rounds. The decision was badly received, and Hulls, tho referee, was mobbed. NEW ZEALAND COUNCIL. At a meeting of the Council of tho New Zealand Boxing Association, Mr F. W. Johnston presided. The Dannevirke and tho Denniston Associations wero affiliated. T. Thompson wrote that his contest in the feather-weight championship of Otago with A. Lane, in July last, had been declared a draw by the referee, yet he had received, and only as lato as October 25th, the second prize. In view of the referee's decision, he contended that the first and second prizes should have been equally divided. He asked the Council to enquire into tho matter. The Council's secretary reported that the decision of the referee in the bout between Lane and Thompson had been referred to the Council, as a question of law was involved. The Council had decided that the refereo had erred in his decision, and that tho bout should have been awarded to Lane. Judging from Thompson's letter, he was evidently unaware of the appeal to the Council and its result. It was decided to communicate with the Otago Association on tho matter before replying to Thompson. The Manawatu Association wrote with respect to what it considered to be an exorbitant demand by J. Hagerty for expenses in connection with a proposed match against L. Porter, and suggested that if thero was no rule relating to the question of expenses, it was necessary, in the interests of the sport, that there should be one. It was decided that tho Council had no power to deal with the matter, which, in the absence of a definite rule, was ono solely between promoting bodies and competitors. Correspondence was received from tho Hawke's Bay Association, stating that it had matched L. Porter and J. Hagerty to meet at Hastings on December 11th; and from the Manawatu Association that it had matched L. Porter and A. Maxwell to meet at Palmerston North on December 4th Each Association had applied for the light-weight championship, which was held by Porter, and each claimed tho right to the event. It was decided that tho Hawke's Bay Association had established its claim to be permitted to carry out the championship.
