A STRIKE AVERTED.

WASHINGTON, November 25. Tho threatened railway strike was averted by the Board of Arbitration granting thirty thousand locomotive engineers an increase of wages. The , Board advocates tho creation of Federal and Stato Wages Commissions. SLAUGHTERMEN'S STRIKE THREATENED. (SPECIAL TO "THE PnESS.") WELLINGTON, November 25. For some time past matters havo not been going very pmoothly in the , -slaughtering trade, and thero are now j indications of a possible strike in the local works. It is t> tatod that tho Wellington Slaughtermen's Union intends to cancel its registration under tho Arbitration Act, and that instead of tho rate paid at present (2os per 100 sheep), tho slaughtermen will ask for 80s per 100. j It is scarcely likely thai such very high pay will bo granted. Just at present largo numbers of fat stock aro coming to hand, nnd a strike would bo exceedingly inconvenient. It is just possible, however, that the companies would bo ablj to carry on with the assistance they would get from tho country farmers and stock-owners generally, though it would be some timo beforo such operators would become export at tho work. (PRESS APSOCIATTON TELEGttAM.. MASTERTON, November 25. In an interview with a "Wairarapa Ago" reporter to-night, relative to the threatened cessation of work by tho slaughtermen, Mr G. C. Cooper, mana- , ging director of the Wellington Far- j mors' Meat Company, said the outlook ' was rather serious. The men had made demands in tho South Island, and a conference had been held which had proved abortive. Mr Cooper does not . think thero will be an immediate strike, j but ho believes that by the cancellation ! of registration the men intend to ceaso ! work when tho awards expiro in j January next. This wll be the height of tho season, and immenso injnry will bo occasioned.

AT THE STATE COLLIERIES.

(SPECIAL TO "THE PnEBS.") GREYMOUTH, November 25. A very acuto position has been tided over at tho State collieries, where lately a trivial dispute threatened to bring about a completo stoppage of j work.

WAIHI AFTERMATH. \

THE BOROUGH COUNCIL'S 1 CIRCULAR. .1 At the meeting of the Cbristchuroh J City Council last night, a circular letter ] was read from the Waihi Borough Council asking for tho Council's approval of the following resolution ! passed by tho Waihi Council:—"That ' > it bo a condition of all future emplos*- j ment on the borough works that each £ and every person employed by the ] Borough Council must sign a declara- ' tion affirming his or her loyalty to tho : * King and the Union Jack, and that j none other than thoso affirming their ] loyalty to tho King and Flag shall be ' * employed in any capacity on tho borough works." Cr. Hunter moved that tho letter . should be received. | Cr. Otley soconded the motion. c Cr. Burgoyne said he would like to j. movo an amendment that tho Christ- v church City Council allowed its em- ' / ployees perfect freedom in respect of <] their actions when they had finished t thoir day's work. Ho did not think the I / Council should be asked to bind their 6 employees in the way proposed. t Cr. Miller said tho matter was one fi that the Council should not deal with. _ There had been a certain amount of 'r, excitement at Waihi which hud pro- j b dueed the request made, but the Conn- ! f cil should not take Euch a silly step |j, as was proposed. It appeared to him to |c. be a reflection on the workers of the ] ' country, and as far as ho knew all tho , t workers in tho country were loyal men. p It seemed nn insult to the Council that r such a letter, should be sent to it. Tho Council decided to "receive" tho „ letter. a
