Mr Bonar Law refused to servo on the Committeo to \J.iicli was referred the question of Mr Stuart Samuel's eligibility to retain his seat as member for Whitechapel, owing to tho Indian Government having purchased large quantities of silver through the firm ia which Mr Samuel is a partner. Tho Opposition urged that the Courts wero tho proper tr.bunal.
Lord Balcarres contended that the law required revision, as it was poseiblo for a member of tho Houso of Commons to supplj ine Government whilo holding the bulk of the shares in a company, though a small partnership interest debarred a man from contracting.
