THE SPEAKER EXPLAINS
(Received November 25th, 9.53 p.m.) SYDNEY, November 25. In tho Assembly, tho Speaker, in reply to Mr Woods' request for an explanation, said that tho motion was cub down because tho first part was iriclcvant to tho issue, and tho Houso agreed to. tako tho motion as amended, tho Speaker making it a simple motion of censure of tho Speaker.
THE MOTION NEGATIVED
(Received November 26th, 12.50 a.m.) SYDNEY, November 25. Mr Wood, in a two-hours' speech, attacked the Government for failing to tako a logical course and clear up the matter of the Speaker's powers. Ho claimed that tho Houso should have tho initiation and control of its own business. Tho Premier, in reply, defended Mr Willis, and declared that ho had no intontion of taking the business of the Houso out of the hands of tho Government, Mr Holman moved tho closure of the debate, and Mr Woods's motion was negatived by 31 votes to 32. It was purely a party vote.
