WRIGHT, STEPHENSON AND CO., LTD.
An intorcsflng exhibit, to farmers especially, is the display of saeds. etc., shown by this firm, who are agents for Messrs Gartons, Ltd., Warrington, England, the world-renowned breeders of agri-cultural seeds. Messrs Gartons, Ltd.. have, after many years of careful study and scientific experiment, successfully raised new breeds of farm plants by the cross fertilisation of two or moro "breeds. A careful selection of tho most vigorous and robust plants aro artificially crossed with other selected plants of the same breed, both having previously been grown for some time under different 6oils and climatic conditions to ensure as great a difference of inherent character relationship as possible. Regeneration of now breeds of farm plants is an essentiality, aud the farmer who fails to keep his crops invigorated up to their maximum power oi production by tho periodical introduction , of regenerated stocks loses m the same way as tho stock breeder who allows his stock* to do-
teriorate through breeding from wornout degenerate animals. For instance, the Gartou oat, the most widely cultivated, the best known and popular oat in tho world is Carton's "Abundance," which is the result of cross-fertilisa-tion of two distinct breeds of white oats. Other breeds of oate, such as Gartons "Yielder," "Storm King. "Tartar King," etc.. aro already extensively grown in Otago and.Sotjthland with wonderful results. Gartons also specialise in swedes, turnips, mangels, rape, wheat, and barley. Their "Superlative" swede, which is a cross between -'Monarch" (tankard shape) and "Best of All**' (globe shape) is well known throughout Now Zealand, and last year yielded in somo cases 40 to -Jo tons to the acre. Messrs Wright, Stephenson and Co. are also agent* for "Bibby's" Calf Food, better known as "Bibby's Cream Equivalent, which proves an excellent substitute for new milk. Calves are very fond of it, and, moreover, they do not scour, which feature is so objectionable in connection with cauraising or artificial foods. Included in this exhibit is a small handy device, known as the Rex Rivetter. This machine is useful m repairing harness, covers, etc. ''Corvusine." a new preparation on this market, is also exhibited. This is a hi-.-'h-class non-poisonous liquid seed aud wheat dressing. It is now being used with great success in England, France, Algeria, Holland, Germany, and Russia, and the colossal increase year by Tear in the sales of Corvus'iie, proves without doubt the agriculturalists realise it* .immense _vM»->; Whilst guarding the seed against rust and smut it is a great protection against the ravages of birds.
