DEHORNING CATTLE.
TO THF EMTOR OF "THE PRESB."
Sir,—l notice the subject of' dehorning cattle has reappeared. Mr' Primrose, director of one of the Government farnis, in an article on dehorning in the Government "Agricultural Journal." affirms that "the loss of life caused by attacks from horned bulls is greater than wo realise." Personally, I fail to see what the well-known character of bulls has to do with the general practise of dehorning cattle and dairy cows. The point is this, the whole question, or rather subject, of dehorning cattle has been thoroughly thrashed out in the law courts of England and Australia. In tho test caso in England; every veterinary college of England, Ireland, and Scotland was represented in court by their respective heads, who voluntarily gave evidence. They unanimously condemned the practico as barbarously cruel, and totally unnecessary. If dehorning cattlo is illegal in England, and also illegal in Australia, it is monstrous that a few influential people should bo allowed to dehorn cattle in New Zealand solely for commercial purposes to benefit their own pockets. . "The beasts look more compac-'-" .hey say. "They sell better i,n the yards." Tho only way .to deal with dehorning cattle is to form a special society to deal with this practice alone, and obtain from the society in England the necessary publications nnd papers, and have them circulated throughout New Zealand.—Yours, etc., H. JUTSUM.
