FAT CATTLE AT ALDINGTON.
TO THE EDITOR OF "THE TRESS." Sir, —Looking at the reports in your paper at the price of fat cattle per hundred pounds, I wish to protest at tho very poor judgment that is given of tho weights of cattle at different times, especially when there is a full market. I have sent a good number of cattlo to Addington at different times, and the last truck I sent down in July, I am sure some of the heifers, which were not more than five years old, did not reach more than £1 per hundred pounds, as I kill a beast occasionally for my own use, and have got a good idea about the weight of a beast, and yet, in your paper, you quoted them at 25s to 30s per hundred. These cattle were fed on swedes and hay for three months, and I am sure would kill out the best of beef, but they were not looking at their best »n account of having to leave the farm the day before the sale, travel over forty miles by rail in a howling snowstorm, and then stop in the yards all night, in the same kind of weather, without feed, which anyone kno___ makes cattle look as if they had ha-d »i bad check. The reason I have written this is because I wish to suggest that all fat cattle should be weighed and sold by ; live weight at per hundred pounds, __. 1 they do in most of the markets in England, and then thi- butcher and farmer will both be getting a fair deal, and we can depend on the reports in the papers being correct. Also, the public [ who buy the meat will know what price ! the farmers are getting for their beef, ! as some of them think because the ! butcher charges up to 7d per lb that we are getting sd, whereas we are often getting under 2Jd per lb. I should also like to suggest that fat cattle that are sent in the night before 1 the market should be put under cover,
as I am sure the auctioneers who have been for a trip to the Old Country will have noticed' it is. done in most of the rc-arketis there.—Yours; etc., ■■■' - • - .:'.-.. -■-■"X'--- - n - F_m3_Eß: -.'
