WORK AT NAPIER EXD STOPPED
(PBEB3 ASSOCIATION TELEOBAU.)
NAPII3R, September 30. The announcement that work on the Napier end of the East Coast Railway was to cease temporarily was not by any means favourably received here. Tho subject was mentioned at a special meeting of the Chamber of Commerce to-day, when members of the East Coast Railway League \vere also present. After some discussion a telegram was forwarded to the Minister, expressing regret at the proposed cessation of work, and trusting that it may only bo temporary; further, that the district generally is greatly perturbed and it. would cause a feeling of relief if the Minister could telegraph his reasons for the temporary stoppage. The Napier Trades and Labour Council passed a resolution . "strongly protesting against the action of the Massey Government in stopping all ■work on the Napier-Gisborne railway, as tho Council are of opinion that it ia only a move to throw surplus labour on tho market in view of work restarting at Waihi, and also to hamper opening up largo estates, which will prevent the workers getting on the land." Nearly 100 men hare been put off the works.
