ADVERTISING NEW ZEALAND.
A HINT FOR THE HIGH COMMIS SIONER.
Mr H. J. Derrett, of Papanui, yho recent!v went Homo on a visit writes to us from Bristol, as follows on a subject of some importance to the Dominion •—
I am visiting the Old Country, and in looking around England, Scotland, and Wales, I have been naturally not a little surprised to find no advertisement of any description-of New Zealand excepting steamer sailings in the London papers. I will give you a. striking example. When visiting the Royal Show of Eng land at Doncastor, I found every other colony but New Zealand represented by a largo and various display of its products. Tlie same with the Royal Show of Scotland, Canada. South Africa, and Australia lavishly represented by grand displays, poor New Zealand boing utterly neglected. In fact at many oi the smaller shows about the country the products of these colonies were displayed. Is it not timo that New Zealand woke up, and advertised her wares on this market?
I hope our new Government will rise to tho occasion and take steps to be represented at the next Royal Shows of England and Scotland which take plnoe about mid-summer each year. The next Royal Show of England will be held at Bristol, and they are already receiving and erecting the paraphernalia nt this city.
Nothing would tend to advertise New Zealand moro widely than a good display at these shows, as theso fixtures attract tho right sort of emigrants as well as the consumers. A eouplo of thousand pounds spent annually in placarding tho country places would also materially assist, by inducing farmers sons and farm hands to emigrate. Bristol, Augn.st 23rd.
