MISHAP TO A STEAMER.
(press association telegram.) AUCKLAND, August 12. "While steaming up the Paeroa River yesterday morning the Northern Conijpany's steumer Taniwha struck a submersed object, and settled on the bottom. The Taniwha was bound from Auckland to Paeroa, and left on Saturday night. Tlie largo number of persons on board were landed without discomfort, and the relief steamer Chelmsl'ord, with two divers and a quantity of salvage gear, was despatched last evening. Telegrams from Captain Sullivan states that a large hole has been torn in the after end of the vessel on the starboard side. The cargo is damaged, but it is expected that the vessel will bo refloated without groat difficulty after the divers have patched the hull. Latest advico is that it will be sonio time l>eforo the Taniwha can be refloated. Powerful pumping gear is boing procured from Auckland. No one attaches the slightest blarrto to Captain Sullivan, who is known in shipping circles as oho of the. best ■ master mariners in the New Zealand coastal trade. Ho knows every inch of tho Paeroa river, but, as ono of the company's officials said, no ono could l>3 unreasonable enough to expect him to know the exact whereabouts of a freshly cut tro« stump. Captain Sullivan and his officers lost n. good deal of their personal property. They managed to claiibor nshore with only a few of their belongings.
