THE LATE MR C. BATESON.

WELLINGTON, August 12. Iho late Mr Charles Bateson, who died on Saturday, and who was wellknown throughout New Zealand, was the son of a cotton broker in Liverpool, and was educated at Wellington Colege, England. Ho camo to Queensland as a young man, and was for a time employed in tho National Bank there. He afterwards became secretary to Mr J. C. Higginson, general manager of the Australian Pastoralists Association in Queensland. Ho reorganised the system of accounts for the company, which had a capital of over a million pounds. The excellent work he did in this connection brought him under the notice of Mr E. H. Seenior, who was secretary of the Trust and Agency Company of Australasia. He was then appointed manager or the company in New Zealand in succession to Mr N. Hamer. At that timo the headquarters were in Christchurch, but were afterwards transferred to Wellington. Mr Bateson has two brothers in the Array, both of whom were in Ladysruith during the siege. Deceased was a, man of the highest integrity, and of very considerable financial ability. He was a thorough Briton, and tne last function he attended was tho British public schools dinner held a few ago at the Wellington Club. A work in which he took a keen interest was the* foundation of the Wellington Golf Club in its present situation at Heretaunga. Ho carried out negotiations for the purchase of the property, and conducted the i construction ot tho club with ability and success.
