NOTES.

.On May 21st, F. Wootton and D. Maher had each ridden 31 winners since the beginning of the present flat racing season in England. Obi, winner of tho Grand National Hurdles Race at Flemington two years ago, and the favourite in the last event, was once given up for dead aftor a bad fall in a hurdle race at Caulfield. J. Chevally, who rode him, took tho saddlo and bridle off him where he lay, and tho usual crowd gathered round. However, after being nulled off the track, he surprised everybody by getting up and walking away as the horses camo out for the next race. His injuries consisted of nothing moro than a slight concussion of the brain.

Mr John Coriett, tho well-known English sporting writer, demolishes tlio claim that "Present Alms" was tho most appropriate nam© ever bestowed on the product of a sire and a dam, the combined names of which were responsible therefor. This claim was made in the belief that Present Alms was by Sentinel out of Beggar Maid, which, Mr Coriett says, is incorrect, Lord Dudley's filly of that name being by Miser out of Salute. Even so, tho noinpnclaturo was good. The death of St. Crispin is reported from Pirongia, Waikato. The son of St. Leger and Tingara, when running in a paddock, got down in a waterhole, from which he could not extricate himself. St. Crispin created a sensation by -defeating Gold' Medallist in the Great Northern Derby of 1398. At tho stud St. Crispin had little opportunity, but sired a few winners.

A Melbourne cable message states that Guncap's time for the V.R.C. Grand National Steeplechase, viz., 6min 283 sec, constitutes a record for tho race. The best time put up in this event prior to Saturday's race was that established by Decoration, vizi, 6min 31sec. in 1906.

Only seven horses finished in the V.R.C. Grand National Steeplechase (states a Melbourne message), the remainder falling. Four of the jockeys wero slightly injured, and the grey gelding sustained an injury to his neck. In the Doutta Galla Hurdle Race Pleasant Ways fell and broke his neck.
