DIOCESAN STANDING COMMITTEE.

The Standing Committee met on Tuesday, July 9th. A report by the organising secretary of the Church Misison Fund was read, showing that tho offertories last year wero £85 5s 3d loss than in tho previous year, and. tho subscriptions, in spite of the usual applications, were £153 8s lOd less; but as there was in tho previous year a special anonymous donation of £100, the falling off should bo reckoned as £53 8s lOd. A resolution of the Northern j Clorgy Conference was referred to the Sub-committee for Education for such i notion for the assistance of Sunday school instruction as may be in their power. The Church Property Trustees wero recommended to carry out the proposals adopted in re the sale of thc Ashburton vicarage site and glebe, and the application of the proceeds. Plans for a bell-tower at St. Paul's, Papanui, and for a new schoolroom at Avonside wero roported on and approved. It was resolved to recommend the Church Property Trustees to make a loan of £600 for the term of years, not exceeding ten, desired by the vestry towards the erection of a portion of the Avonsido ; schoolroom, to be paid £1 for £1 to meet the sums raised by the parish for this work, and on the architect's certificate of value of the work done. It was resolved that in the case of an advance of stipend by the diocese for a second quarter, bank interest shall be charged to the parish or districts on the same. A Church Property Trust grant was authorised for a second curate at Timaru from Ist September next. A request for permission to remove trees from the north side of the Fairlie Church site was referred to the Archdeacon of Timaru to visit and report. Notico was authorised to be sent to the Maori Mission Board that while the diocese will continue its contribution to the Board up to 31st December next, after that date it must reconsider the arrangement.
