The committee had mado 1 arrangements for two papers to be read. One from Mr R. _. Alexander, I on "Soil Moisture," and one from Dr. F. "W. Hiigendorf, on "Pure, Seeds." The* following additional remits were recommended: — "Cow Testing."—That it is desirable to encourage ownens of dairy herds to adopt milk testing and weighing, for tho purpose of ascertaining the value of individual cows, and that the Department' of Agriculture be requested to g.ve the necessary information and assistance to enable dairy farmers to adopt such methods. "Agricultural Instruction."— I That it is desirable that the Government should arrange for the services of the Departmental veterinary surgeons and other officers for tho purpose of giving lectures to farmers during the slack season of the year. The Chair man moved tho .adoption of the report, and this was seconded by Dr. Levinge, who spoke regarding the necessity of bringing pressure to bear on the Government for tho purpose of getting help in the .important matter of cow-testing. Tho Chairman said that ho believed that, so far, no official had been ac-I tually working in Canterbury, and the i only help that farmers had been able to get was advice. The fact was that there were not enough officers to go round, but the Department was keen to help. | It was resolved that Messrs J. D. Hall, J. Henderson, W. Hayward, T. D Boag, M. Muiphy, C. H. Ensor, R. E. Alexander, and T. W. Adams be delegates to represent the Association at the forthcoming conference. LIGHT HORSE COMMITTEE'S REPORT. Mr W. Hayward moved and Mr D. W. Westenra seconded the report of ; the Light Horse Committee. The re-i port recommended That after j tho words "maiden hunters," • the words "catch weights" be added. The date of the horse parado was fixed for Wednesday, September 18th. Mr J. Grigg said he objected to clause three. It was not necessary to have severe jumps to judge a horse properly, and there was considerable danger to some of the competitors who were not so well mounted. He moved an amendment. i Mr D. W. Westenra contended that i the ordinary jumps were not t r fficult ! ones. He thought the horses got used i to the round, and were more likely to have an accident when pulled off on a strange round. Sir G. Clifford seconded Mr Grigg's amendment which was carried. I The report as amended was adopted- , DAIRY AND PRODUCE COMMITTEE'S REPORT. The above committee submitted the , following report: — 1. That the class for 101b salt butter be deleted. 2. Tho Ground Committee recommended that space be let to the Kennel Club for the purpose of running a dog show at the Metropolitan Show, the Agricultural and Pastoral Association, however, taking no responsibility. The report was adopted. SHEEP COMPETITIONS COMMITTEE. Tho Sheep Committee reported reearding tho suggestion of Mr R. A. naffey, "that the rams entered for the Corriedale and hall bred wool and mutton competitions be debarred from entering in other classes," that the committee could not see its way to recommend the above. The report was adopted. THE QUESTION OF MEDALS. The New Zealand Shcepbreeders' Association (South Island) offered four gold medals valued at four guineas each for competition at the forthcoming show i in English Leicester, Southdown, fiihropI shire, and Corriedale and halfbred I (competing together) for ram above six- ' teen months and under twenty-eight 1 niontlis, from a flock registered or in- ■ eluded iv tho New Zealand Flock Book. ; In the case of the Corriedale and half- | bred medal, this is to be awarded to • the most useful sheep tor improving the ! halfbred or Corriedale breed. S Tho Chairman said this was the kind j of offer that was very much appreciated, : and he moved that it be accepted with :thanks. i The resolution was carried with acclamation. j Mr J. Grigg moved that "champion" I bronze medals, with a money prize, be given instead of the present gold, silver and bronze medals. He said he thought a medal was so liable to be lost or put away in a drawer, that a bronze medal {with a photograph of the winning animal

Sir George Clifford said ho had thought over the proposal, and sincerely hoped it would not be carried. He agreed as to the value of a photograph, but meet (breeders procured a photograph in any case. He dwelt upon the advertising value of a gold medal as ' compared with a bronze medal, which latter rather gave tho general impression of a third prize only. Dr. Levinpo and Mr A. Chamberlain supported Sir George Clifford's view. Tho motion was lost. I Mr Grigg then gave notice of motion, that the secretary be instructed to prepare an album of photographs of all champion animals at the Metropolitan Show. The motion was carried. . ■' Tho Chairman, at tho conclusion of an appeal for holding a winter show in Christchurch. moved that the, secretary be instructed-to enter into correspondence with the National Dairy Association at Palmereton North, with a view to getting facts and figures regarding tho arrangements in vogue there.
