AN OLD COLONIST.

AUCKLAND, May 30. The death has occurred of ,Mr John Webster, a very old colonist, aged ninety-four years. Ho arrived at Sydney ia 1838, and in tha following year inado tho overland journey to Adelaide, and on hie return to Sydney again made the journey, this time by tlio banks of tlio Murray River, being one of the first party of whites to i attempt that route. Th'o. journey occupied five months, and the party experkaiced -great trouble with thp'blacks. Hβ arrived in New Zealand in 1841, and went to California at the tinio of tho .'49 rush. There he met Captain JBoyd. and accompanied him on tho yacht Wanderer on a crui&c to tho South Seas, where Boyd was murdered by Solomon Islanders. Tho yacht was subsequently wrecked in a gaio at Port Mncquarie. In 1851 Webster, returned to New Zealand, and settled at Opononi, Hokianga Harbour, wherp he for years entertained distinguished -visitors to the district, including tho Karls of Glasgow and Itanfurly and other New Zealand Governors. During tho past Mr Wcbstor has been spending tho overling of his loiifj and eventful life in quiet retirement at Devonport.
