At the" meeting of the Ashburton Borough' Council on Monday evening, 'Cγ. D. Wood report.od that much damago had been done from time to timo, to books and periodicals in tho Public Library. Quite recently twenty pages had boon cut out and- removed from a volume of tho Encyelopediavßritannica, and he did riot think the damage had been done by young ]>ersons. Cγ. Wood further reported that the members of tho Library Committee had arranged to make frequent surprise visits to tho library, and to take all steps possible to prevent damage being done to tho books and periodicals. Prior to the commencement of the ordinary business at the Ashburton Borough Council on Monday evening. Cγ. P. Stuart, the senior member present, warmly congratulated the Mayor (Mr H. Davis) on -his having been re-olected unopposed for tho tenth year in succession. Councillors generally spoke of tho good work the Mayor had done, during tho past nine years, and cordially wished him another successful year* of office. The Mayor thanked tho councillors for their kindly expressions, and assured them ho would do, as he- had done in the past, his very best for tho general welfare of the borough. A motion expressing; appreciation of the Mayor's past services was carried by acclamation.
