PETERSEN'S LTD.
In connection with the Local Industries Week, Messrs Petersen's Limited, jewellers, of this city, are malting a very fine display of Jewellery of every description, which is made in their , own workshops, which are situated at the rear of their new premises. The manager kindly escorted our representative through the workshops and explained to him the various processes through which a piece of jewellery has to undergo before it is ready to be offered to the public as a finished article. The first process being-the melting of the gold, which is done in a special furnace, the blast for which is produced by a special blower worked by electricity. Aftor the gold has been cast in ingot form, it is then taken to the rolling mills and rolled to any desired thickness, a process which "occupies but very little time under the powerful machinery at their command; and if wanted for wire, is passed through a special wire drawing machine. The gold is now ready to be operated upon by the workmen, who were busy making same up in most artistic pendants, brooches, and bracelets. Ono is struck at the consideration that has been shown by this progressive firm for the comfort of ita employees, their workshops being not only woll ventilated and lighted with electric light, but supplied also with hot water pipes' throughout, which have been much appreciated during the few cold snaps" already experienced. Passing from the jewellery department, one is ushered into the watch repairing workshop, where a large staff are constantly employed in the repairing of watches and clocks of every description, the firm having recently imported several first-class English workmen. Jt is well worth while paying a visit to the display window of Messrs Petersen's, in which every article of jewellery shown at present is manufactured by them. Tho Firm will be pleased to show anyone interested through their workshops during this week, and it fs not only interesting, but highly instructive.
