FARMERS' UNION
A meeting of the Former*' Union was held yesterday afternoon, when there were present: —Messrs F. G. Horrell (chairman), G. Shcat. W. Hall, and J Andrew. Apologies wero received from Messrs C. H. Knsor and R. Evans. The secretary of tho Canterbury Salovards Company. Ltd., wrote stating that he would be p!ea<*-ed to see the president and the vice-president of tho Union in connection with the conditions cf the p'.ibii'? sheen dip at Addingtou. which was being renewed. Mr Sheat said that ho had inspected the di-£. and. had found it everything that could be desired. He had fcrnd that compulsory dipping was insisted on in order to obviato the dangers caused by dealers putting unclean sheep into the yard and infecting otners with vermin.
In reference to the same matter, the secretary of the Oxford branch of the Vnion wrote stat'rg that at a meeting of the branch, it had been expressed as tho opinion of the meeting that farmers purchasing sheep at any public yard should be allowed to dip them where they those on condition that they guaranteed immediate and thoroutrn dipping. It was decided to reply that Mr Sheat had br-en informed that the Department had been in the habit of releasing sheep in tho past on the understanding that they wctild be dipped on arrival at their destination, and ha/1 found that they had not been so dipped. They were, therefore, ouforcing tho compulsory dipping clause.
