SPECIAL MEETING OF BOARD

Mil HORREU. RE-ELECTED CHAIRMAN.

A special meeting of thc Board was then held for the purposo of electing a chairman and appointing committee*.

The Chairninn leported that his term of office, having drawn to its close, according to the Act, he wished before leaving thc chain' to tender cordial thanks to all the members of tho Hoard for the courtesy and consideration extended to him for the past, two years. Ho was thoroughly cognisant of the fact that the amalgamation of tho two Boards would absorb a great deal of the time of any person who undertook the office, of chairman, and it was needless to say that such had been the case, for tho records would prove that his attendance at the Board's office and the large number of meetings, besides visits to institutions, etc., hud averaged almost three per week. When it was remembered that thorn were seldom fewer than ton meetings per month, and Sundays and Saturdays "wero deducted from thirty days, it would be obvious that the intervals were short. However, ho had been able to devote tho time, and it had given him pleasure to do the work as well as ho could, although that might not havo been quite up to tho standard that was perhaps expected from one entrusted with so important a public position. He briefly, summarised tho progress the Board had thus far mado in endeavouring to improve tho institutions tinder it* control. With regard to tho future, tho aim of the Board should bo to renovate the old wards of tho Hospital, and to provide for tho isolation of infected patients, as well as vho erection of fever wards on the most approved principled: but such work necessarily required the outlay of considerable sums of. money, which ho thought could only be expected from the contributing sources, by instalments extending over a term of years, and th 6 raising of such means would fall to the lot of tlw successors of some of the present members of tho Board, and should therefore not dj attempted too hastily by themselves. He would add that the Board was to l,p congratulated on having such a staff of efficient and reliable, officers in charge of its many institutions and departments, and they were entitled to tho Board's hearty thanks for the excellent manner in which their several duties wero performed. Upon the motion of Mr Boag, seconded by Mr Moore, Mr Horrell was nominated as chairman. Mr' Scott proposed Mr Allison as chairman, but the motion secured no seconder. . There being no other nomination, Mr Horrell was declared elected. COMMITTEES. The following committees were appointed, tho chairman to act ex officio in' each case: — ~,,-, Hospital-—Messrs Sorenseii, McMillan, Hall, and Turnbull. Rev. W. J. L. Closs. and Mrs Wilson.
