At the last meeting of the Paparua County Council Mr Leslie occupied the chair. Mr W. S. Short, Commissioner appointed to hold an enquiry into tho futuro maintonanco of the Hakaia bridge, forwarded his report, which stated that tho annual charge of £300 is in future to be borne by tbe Sohrvn and Ellesmere Counties in the proportion of £200 and 1.100 respectively. Satisfaction was expressed at being relieved of tho necessity of contributing to the upkeep of the bridge. Complaints were received from tho water race caretakers of tho practice of watermen employed by threshing machine owners blocking the water races, and it was decided to writo to each of tho engine owners drawing attention to tho matter, and asking for their co-opera-tion in stopping the. nuisance. It was reported that all tho races in the district had been flowing satisfactorily, and there had been no floods in the river during the month. A contract for the work on tlio new road at Hornby has been let, and the work started. The final adjustment has been made between the Council and the Malvern County with reference to the assets and liabilities of the "West Melton .'•".ding, and the payment by tho Malvern County of £703 6s lid completed the negotiations.
