CLAIMS OF THE HON J. A. MILLAR.
In view of Sir Joseph Ward's repeated determination to resign, one naturally looks for tho name of tho uew Premier (says Saturday's Wellington ."Post"). Men in the ranks of the Liberal and Labour Part; have been suggested, but in the lost 2-1 hours or more a new complexion has. been put upon the position. The record of one man, it is stated, has been, overlooked, and that man is tho Hon. J. A. Millar. Indeed, it is 'seriously suggested that his chances are how regarded vcrj favourably. As one'member ot tho Party put it to-day. "Apart from Sir Joseph Ward, Mr Millar stands alone. Ho has an excellent record, and he has never'pushed forward his own claims to consideration. Indeed. w e are in danger of forgetting the excellence of his record in the Parliamentary life of this country. He is an outspoken man, ho has offended somo people, but his honesty and his capacity must command ndiniration." Further, the member, in question said that Mr Millar commanded th 0 admiration of both sides of tho House, and pointed out that his administration was lc«s criticised than that of any other man in the existing" Cabinet- Be that as it may, it is o fact that a considerable body of opinion has grown in favour of Mr Millar leading tho new Government. It. is fairly well known that Mr Millar has substantial outside inducements to outer commercial lifo, but he may still be persuaded to continuo his Parliamentary career. (SPECIAL TO "TUE TRESS*'). DUNEDIN. March 3*. In response to his telegram of ycai? rdt V v \,-" 1 : J " F * Arnold has rocemwl the following reply from Mr AY. A* X eitch. M.P..—--Many thanks for your kind message I am very ' confident that tho future has great successes m storo for a democratic party."
