ELLESMERE SEAT.
It was generally anticipated throughout the electorate that Mr R. Heaton Rhodes would be returned for Ellesrocre, although it was expected that the Independent candidate would get a larger share of tho votes than he did. •Mr Rhodes was at South bridge on Thursday night when, the returns were being announced, and when it became known that he had headed the poll, he addressed a large crowd of people in ■ front of the '"Ellesmore Guardian 1 ' offioo Mr Rhodes thanked tho electors for the confidence they had reposed in him by electing him as. their representative for a further term. He nad enjoyed the privilege of representing tho constituency in Parliament ' for twelve years, and he would do his best during the next three years to show the people that their confidence had nob been misplaced. He was pleased to be able to say that ihe contest had been fought in a friendly manner. . No illfeeling had been shown by any of the candidates. ,Ho believed that men should be ablo to differ' in politics without introducing any personalities whatever. He warmly thanked all those who had worked to secure hia return, and the electors for their renewed confidence. He would alsvays endeavour to do his best, not alone for the constituency he represented but for the whole Dominion, and he hoped that if he contested the eeat at the next elee tion he would again, receive iheir sup* port. Mr Rhodes was heartily cheered' as he left for Tai Tapu by motor-car.
