ALLEGED BLACKMAIL.
THE NERVOUS COUNTESS OF DEMAISr. United PWJ AMociaioii-By Electrio Telegraph—Ckipyright. LONDON, December 8. Counsel tor the prosecution in the Police Court proceedings in the blackmail case, stated that the Countess of Dcmain met John Hamilton Dobbio in Australia or New Zealand in 1399, and , also knew Dan O'Connor in Australia. Dobbio in 1903 becamo engaged to be married. O'Connor and the- Countess wrote an anonymous letter, which counsel.described as libellous, to Dobbie's prospective mother-in-law, hoping to. prevent the marriage. Prisoners secured the letters and used them as the" basis for blackmailing. Prisoners interviewed O'Connor and sought to induce | him to incriminate the Countess, who; was afterwards taken to prisoners' office j and terrified.into signing four bills of j exchange of. £100 each, under thethreat of the arrest of herself and O'Connor. The prosecution stated that' Dobbie was now in Australia. The Countess was reputed to bo worth £12,000 a year. Tho Countess denied that she wrote the anonymous letters herself, and said ehe did not know that O'Connor was writing them until afterwards, - \The caso was adjourned. ...
