TRAMWAY REGULATIONS.

THE WELLINGTON CONFERENCE.

CHRISTCHURCH BOARD TO BE REPRESENTED. .

Tbe proposed tramway, rsgolations were briefly referred to at the Christdhurch Tramway Board's meeting yesterday. The Chairman (Mr G. T. Booth) remarked that although the copies of the regulations forwarded to the Tramway Boards .and other local bodies had been marked "private and confidential," there had been considerable public discussion oh the matter. He considered that the position taken up by the members of tho Board was the correct one, and he congratulated them upon having taken such a stand. Mr Sykos said a great deal of misapprehension prevailed as to the probable effect of the regulations. He quoted from Hansard to show that when the Tramways Act Amendment Bill was under discussion last session, the Hon. R. McKenzie, in reply to Mr T. M. Wilford, had stated, that all that was aimed at in the Bill was to see that there were qualified men in charge of th© cars, and that when running, the cars were in a safe condition, and the appliances adequate. The Muustorhad added-that he would be well satisfied to allow double the number a -car was licensed" to carry to be carried, and that he had no intention of bringing a "hornet's nest about his ears" by trying to see that sufficient cars were provided to-.carry all the people at "rufsh" times, ■

The Works and Traffic Committee, in its reportj stated that it* had received a communication marked "Confidential" from the Public Works Department, enclosing a draft of new regulations under "The Tramways Act" of last session. At the suggestion of th© Wellington City Council, a conference of. tramway authorities would be held on the matter in Wellington, and the committee had appointed the chairman and Mr A. W. Beaven, with the general manager, to represent it at such conference.. Tbe report was. adopted without discussion.
