CHRISTCHURCH TRADESMEN AND THE KING'S BIRTHDAY.
TO THE EDITOR OF "THE PRESS." gj r —I am given to understand that a, meeting of tradesmen was held in. the city this morning, and that it was decided to observe the King's Birthday on Monday, June sth, instead of the proper date, Saturday, June 3rd. Is there any sense m this? All the Government offices (including the Post and Telegraph Departments), the municipal offices, factories, warehouses, Banto, Insurance offices, merchants, stock and station agents and auctioneers will bo closed on June 3rd. Everybody will be closed and holiday-making, with the exception of the shopkeepers and their assistants, who will be kicking up their lieels waiting for customers. What nossible loss would the tradesmen suffer by making Friday the late night? Tho retailers of this ieity are too pettifogging with regard to public holidays when they seek \to change times and customs for their own imaginary gains. By making a moveable time-table of, the King's_ Birthday the shopkeepers aro in this instance only defeating their own ends, as I ani convinced they will not rake in many shekels on June 3rd.—Yours, etc..
