COAL AND BLANKET FUND.
TO THE EDITOR OT "THE PRESS. 1
Sir, —Coronation Day is fast approaching: -should not the poor be remembered, in a very special manner, on that day, with regard to the sufferings they are then passing through, and likely will be, for another month or two after, for want of coal and blankets? May I earnestly appeal to the Bishop and Dean and Chapter of our Anglican Cathedral, to crown themselves with honour, by having an offertory for the Mayor's Coal and Blanket Fund, at the great service they are proposing" to hold on the morning, at our Cathedral. May i suggest that collections be also taken up for the same object at every other service, not only Anglican, hut Roman and all other denominations, including the united out-door service, which -I understand is to be held. I am sure that --were this done, a very large amount would be obtained, as, for such an object, sovereigns and half-sovereigns would be as plentiful as threepenny bits are on ordinary occasions. It is wellknown how warmly sympathetic King George and Queen Mary are towards the Poor and suffering, and nothing would" please them more than to know that a special thank-offering, was made, on their great and eventful day in this far-off _ City of Christchurch, their visit to which 10 years previously they still pleasantly remember, in support of such nn object as the Mayor's Coal and Blanket Fund. I earnestly pray that .what I have proposed will be carried out in its entirety, and am.—Tours, otc " . LEONARD W. BLAKE. Christchurch, May 26th.
