PROGRESS OF THE WORK. (srECUL TO "rnt rEKSS.") GREYMOUTH, December ~. According to a "Star" correspondent, work at th© Otira end of the nig tunnel is progressing satisfactorily. Electric locomotives are now working very well, running three-quarters of a mile into the tunnel, rapidly carrying away the excavated material. The extreme face of tho work is now ono and oneeighth miles from tho Otira portal. Work at the Bealey end of tho tunnel is going along fairly well. Tho ground thero, although not so wet as at Otira, requires a great deal of timbering. Work could he found lor GO more men on the Otira tunnel contract if they could ho secured. Regarding the latter report, enquiries mado locally confirm the assertion that 70 men" could bo placed at tho tunnel works at present. However, only a very few men are offering.
