A POSTMASTER-GENERAL'S VIEWS.
SYDNEY, December 6.
Speaking at the Chamber of Manufacturers' dinner, tho PostmasterGeneral said that Imperial' penny postage would bo in operation not later than the Ist of May. Ho iioped that the day of cheaper cables was not far distant. The Government would do all they could. They wanted to nationalise the Atlantic cable, but there was a lot of opposition to the proposal. He supported for all he knew sixpenny cables between England and Australia.
Mr Cook, the Leader of the Federal Opposition, said ho hoped the day would come when they would have a right of way by cable through the heart of tho Empire, and when such cables could be used to advantage in respect to defence. The Government might rely upon tho support of the Opposition in any steps taken towards tho welding of the Empire together.
