. A meeting of the committee of tho Early Colonists' Section of tho Museum was held yesterday, when Mr J. C." Adams presided. _"'■"..

..Lord Kilbracken wrote asking that copies should! be forwarded to him of documents showing exactly what was •wanted from the descendants of the original members of the Canterbury Association, with whom he had been > asked to oommunieate. - The secretary was requested to for- ... ward the necessary documents as asked. . ■ A letter; was . read fTom the town clerk, v asking that members of the committee should become members of the Executive iCo-umitteo set up with _reference to the celebration of the Diamond Jubilee of the province. Tho Chairman moved:—'-That this . committee being appointed solely for : the purpose of collecting and preserving historical. matter in connection with , tho early days of the colonisation: of the province, regrets it is unable to join, jis a committee, with the Executive Committee of citizens iV making arrangements for the celebratioii of tne "Diamond Jubilee of the province *' ' That simply set out tho position that it would be ultra vires for the committee, as such, to join the executive. Mr J. Hay seconded the motion. • Mr Mostey pointed out that the invitation to ask Lords Kilbracken and Cobham to' visit Canterbury in tho Diamond Jnbileo year came from the committee.

The Chairman said ho, did not think the committee were bound 1n any way. Al' that had been done was renllv to suggest that if the Diamond Jubilee were celebrated, theso gentlemen should ho invited.

Mr S. Hurst Seager said .that he had seen many of the prominent business men in tho city on tlie subject of the eflebrat'on of. the Diamond Jubilee. They were all opposed to the idea as superfluous. They had celebrated the fiftieth year properly, and there was no reason why tho sixtieth year should bo --.rr.minently celebrated. Dr. Hight. pointed out that the celebration might'take the form of raising a fund for the pur.iroise of hnusina the \arious documents, etc.,. collected by that committee; by establishing a Jcholarship for local history; or by /Rising a fund to nnblisli a history of «mterbuTy. Thereforo it might be thnt i the celebration of the Diamond Jubilee might .interest them most nearly. -This was a point worth consideration.
