Mr B. N. Jacobs left for Wellington by the Victoria last night. The Rev. H. S. Leach, vicar of HoKitika, who, for the past month, has been assisting the Rev. C. A. Fraer at St. Michael's, leaves Christchurch this morning for the West Coast. Mr M. M. Cleary. who was for many years Governor of Lyttelton Gaol, and who retired last year, left Lyttelton yesterday afternoon by the Cornwall for Liverpool. Mr Cleary, who is accompanied by his sister, will revisit his birthplace in Ireland, after an absence of over fifty-three years. •Mr J. G. Purvis, an old resident of the Rangiora and Fernside district, left by the lonic for a trip to tho Old i Country. Mr Thomas Wellington Rapley, who has been appointed organiser for the Liberal party tliroughout New Zealand, wns the first secretary of the Wellington Rowing Club, was an officer of the Union Rowing Club, Christchurch, and was secretary of the Wanganui Rowing Club. In a private letter received by tko mail yesterday, Mdlle Dolores expresses her delight at once more being able to visit tho Dominion. She is especially looking forward to renewing her many friendships in Christchurch. Mr Andrews, the new stationmaster, took up his duties at Southbridge yesterday, and Mr Beekman left tor Dunedin by the morning train. The resignations of Miss A. E. Hinch (Okain's Bay) and Miss Webster •'Little River) were accepted yesterday by tho Education Board.
j The following appointments were madly the Education Board yesterday: —Christchurch East (Gloucester street main), Miss E. N. Webster, assistant mistress; Phillip-town, Elsie Pratt, pupil teacher, as of fourth year; Russell's Flat, Mrs E. Allan,* mistress; Linwood North, Miss M. V. Taylor, assistant mistress; Sefton, Miss A. Down, mistress; Waiau, Miss Amy B. Morgan, mistress; Belfast, Ernest H. uastion, as pupil teacher of the second year, subject to tho production of satisfactory medical certificates. It was agreed that Miss Steele, of Rangiora, should take up her appointment at Belfast. A number of farmers, business men, and others met in tho ante-room of the Southbridge Town Hall on Friday evening for the purpose of saying goodbye to Mr A. Beekman, who has been stationmaster at Southbridge for some months. lhe function, which took the form of a smoke concert, was presided over by Mr E. G. Hubbard, chairman of th. Town Board. Mr Beekman was presented with a purse of sovereigns as a token of the esteem in which ho is held by the residents.
