CROQUET.
UNITED CLUB
A very successful doubles handicap tournament, begun on Saturday, and finished on Monday, waa won by Mrs Stringer and Mrs Blackburne, the second prize falling to Mrs Secretan and Miss D'Oylcy. The singles handicap, which has been going on through the season, was completed on Wednesday, when Kiver, receiving 2} bisques, beat Butterworlh. A very fino game in this tournament was tbo semi-final, between Butter worth and Croxton. the two strongest, players in the club, who both pleyed at /scratch. This game was remarkable as disproving the supposed great disadvantage to a player, under most circumstances, of having one of his balls pegged out. Butterworth, being a rover with one ball, end having 9 points to make with the other, deliberately pegged out his rover ball, and then skilfully keeping out of his opponent's way with the other ball, deprived him of all chances of making a break, end, getting in a three-bail break himself, won in fino style. A meeting of.croquet members was held to make arrangements for next season, when Messrs Croxton, Huttenvorth and Blackburne were elected as the Croquet Committee, the lostnamed being appointed croquet secretary.
