THE WRECK OF THE MAINE.

A MENACE TO SHIPPING

United Press Association—By Electrio Telegraph—Copyright. (Received March 16th, 9.30 p.m.)

WASHINGTON, March 16i

The Committee on Naval Affairs at Washington lias approved of tho appropriation of 500,000 dollars to raise the wreck of the United States battleship Maine from the bottom of Havana harbour. The wreck is reported to be a menace to navigation.

A terrific explosion on the night of February 15th, 1898 caused the destruction of the battleship Maine as she lay in Havana. Harbour, and resulted in the death of two officers and 270 men, was the most dramatic prelude to the outbreak of hostilities between the United States and Spain. The American Court of Enquiry found no evidence to fix the responsibility, but attributed tlie explosion to a mine placed underneath the vessel. The Spanish Commission which was set up considered that the explosion was from within. "Remember tho Maine!" was the American battle-cry adopted for the war.
