SENSATIONAL LIFT ACCIDENT.
AN ENGINEER INJURED.
About 4.30 p.m. on Saturday an accident occurred at the United Service Hotel, a ; voung married - man r.amed Frederick Seinb, employed aS engineer and electrician at the hotel, having a marvellous escape from serious, if not fata], injury. The affair occurred in the servants' portion of the establishment, where there is an electrical lift for the conveyance of goods from the basement to the kitchen, which is situated on the fourth storey. Semb was on the uppermost flat, tailing to his wife at the time, and required to use the lift, which was then in the basement. Ho the collapsible door _ and put his arm round to pull the wire rope, which communicates with the machinery driving the lift, for the purpose of bringing the lift up. By come mischance his foot slipped on the edge of the open lift-well, and the unfortunate man was hurled down the shaft, a distance of fully fifty fest, and fell on to the heavy timber and iron framing on top of the, lift. One of the men attending to the boiler heard the crash and hurried to ascertain what had happened. In the meontime Mrs Semb rushed downstairs. Semb was sent to the Hospital in the ambulance.
On enquiry at the Hospital ife was. ascertained that Semb was making a cood recovery. His injuries appeared to be miraculously light. He was, of course, badly bruised by his fall, and the most serious injury was a stab wound in the . It was thought that one of his ankles was broken, but the X-rays failed to disclose the existence of a fracture. Semb recovered consciousness shortly after the accident, and last night was getting on very well.
