INDUSTRIAL ASSOCIATION.

ANNUAL MEETING

The annual meeting of the Canterbury Industrial Association was held last night, Mr F. E. Jones presiding over a fairly large attendance. Apologies were, made for Messrs J. A. Frostick and A. Kaye.

Mr A. Peppier was re-elected the Association's representative on the Board of Governors of the Technical College. The President's annual address dealt in detail with the Association's work during last year. With referenco to Industries' Week, he stated that the Association's efforts in this direction exhausted its'funds, and he feared that this excellent institution would have to bi abandtined this year, unless manufacturers come to the aid of the Association financially. The industries of j the Dominion that were well establish-' ed appeared to be enjoying prosperity, and there was a .general feeling of satisfaction amongst manufacturers—so much so that the Association found it hard to interest them in the work, of pushing New Zealand goods. "The i imports for the year ending December 31st show a gratifying falling-off, being £14,813.644, against £17,247,162 in 1908, while our exrorts have increased from £16,075,252 in 1908 to £19,635,936 in 1909. When the figure* showing the result of the present harvest and wool exrwrt are available, 1 venture to say they will be the most satisfactory ever previously presented by the Dominion. The result of decreased importing and increased export means prosperity, and the Association views with pleasure the decreased imports, which, we trust, will continue to decrease in proportion to our exports." The report closed with an expression of praise for the services rendered the Association by Mr Charters, and a suggestion that the Association's thanks should be expressed by electing him a life member of the Association. The balance-sheet showed that the balance brought forward was £66 3s, and the income £77 ss, and the expenditure was £94 4s Bd, leaving a balance to credit of £49 3s 4d. The excess of assets over liabilities was £4398 4s 4d.

Tho report and balance-eheet ■were adapted. The result of the election of officers for the coming year was as follows:— President, Mr R. Buchanan; vice-pre-sidents, Messrs F. Cooper and P. Hercus; hon. treasurer, Mr W. W. Charters; hon. secretary. Mr C. R. Ford; oemmittec, Messrs A. W. Beaven. R. S. Badcer. C. B. Cogan, S. T. Cox, T X. Horsley. P. H.vmans. S. H. Maddren, C. R. Norton.
