At the swimming carnival the 100 yds championship of Australasia resulted: — Cecil Healy (New South Wales) 1, Graham (Queensland) 2, Hardwicko (New South Wales) 3. Won by a length. Time, 58 seconds. Half-mile championship of Australasia: —Beaurepaire (Victoria) I, Mason (Victoria) 2, Wright (New South Wales) 3. Won by 40 yards. Time, 12min 15sec. AN EARTH TREMOR. SYDNEY, January 31. The seismograph at Riverview College yesterday recorded a severe earthquake shock, originating, probably, in the. Tasman Sea, 400 miles southeast of Hobart. PLAGUE. Tho Health Department has been advised of a case of plague near Noumea. VICTORIAN ANNIVERSARY. - (Received February Ist, 12.15 A.m.) MELBOURNE, January 31. Anniversary Day wa» celebrated by the usual A.N.A. exhibition and : luncheon. THE PAPANUI. A cable has been received from the London office of th© New Zealand Shipping Company, instructing tho removal of the Papanui (which was damaged recently off the Tasmanian coast) from dock, pending arrangements. A tender of £23,000 was recently accepted for repairs, provisionally on th© directors ratifying it. What the arrangements referred to are, is not stated. Th© vessel lias been idle in dock for ten days, and the dock dues amount to £100 per day. The Papanui will anchor in the bay,,-nrhere ehe will float on her tank tops. She has a holo in her hull twenty-five feet long and five feet wide.
