FIRES.

There was an alarm of fire at Ashburton yesterday, but it turned out to be nothing more serious than the ignition of a heap: of rubbish on a reserve at the back or the old cemetery. The fire brigade were soon qn the spot, and the flames were'speedily extinguished. A disastrous fire occurred at Rongotea early this morning, by which Good's boarding house, Reid's painter's> shop, Wood's photographic studio, tailoring establishment, and Gleeson'a large unoccupied grain store were oom,p_etely destroyed. The insurances were:—On the boarding-house, £450 in the Standard; Raid, £175; Wood, £75 on the building; Penny, £300 on the stock, and £250 on the building, all in the New Zealand office.
