FIRES.
There was an alarm of fire at Ashburton yesterday, but it turned out to be nothing more serious than the ignition of a heap: of rubbish on a reserve at the back or the old cemetery. The fire brigade were soon qn the spot, and the flames were'speedily extinguished. By a fire in an Ashburton County Council plantation _ on. the Maronan road, about half a mile of fencing and three or four acres of .grass, belonging to Mr W. T.LiU: were^destroyed. A fiverroomed- house situated on the Seadow. -road leading tost3ie,opihi fishing grounds from Tima.ni>, the property of Mr Trehau, was totally destroyed by fire on Sunday nijg&V *at L about' ten o'clock. THwJhosnse '"had been unoccupied for som£x-ays, and;everything, including the furniture, was destroyed. The insurances are'not' known. (PRESS ASSOCIATION TELEGKAM.) PALMERSTON N., December 22. A disastrous fire occurred at Rongotea early this morning, by which Good's boarding house, Reid's painter's> shop, Wood's photographic studio, tailoring establishment, and Gleeson'a large unoccupied grain store were oom,p_etely destroyed. The insurances were:—On the boarding-house, £450 in the Standard; Raid, £175; Wood, £75 on the building; Penny, £300 on the stock, and £250 on the building, all in the New Zealand office.
