OBITUARY.
A NOTED JOURNALIST.
United Press Association—By Electric Telegraph—Copyright. LONDON, December 17. The death is announced of Mr Frederick Greenwood', the well-known author and journalist. Mr Greenwood, who was born in 1830, was one of a family of brilliant journalists and , authors, who also (possessed executive abilities and a general grasp of affairs, such as is not always found associated with conspicuous literary powers. Mr Frederick Greenwood wee the founder and first editor of two prominent and highly successful Conservative newspapers, tho "Pall Mall Gazette" and "St. James's Gazette," the latter founded when the former changed' hands and took the opposite side in jolitics. The 'Tall Mall Gazette" (the name of which, like that of its short-lived contemporary, the "Tomahawk," was borrowed from Thackeray's novels), introduced new and strong features into London weekly journalism, and its success was greatly enhanced at the outset by Mr James Greenwood's renowned contribution, "A Night in a Workhouse." Mr Frederick Greenwood's lasting claim to remembrance rests largely in the fact that it was at his suggestion that the British Government purchase^ , its interest in the Suez Canal. On the Bth Atpril, 1905, a banquet was given to th? veteran journalist on the occasion of his seventy-fifth birthday, and highly eulogistic speeches were made by prominent men of the day in honour of their guest.

(PBEBS ASSOCIATION TBLEGBAM.) DUNEDIN, December 19. Mr E. G. Allen, ex-member of the House of Representatives for Chalmers, dies* yesterday afternoon. Ho first entered Parliament in 1896, and represented the constituency until last year, when he was defeated on the second ballot. He had resided in Port Chalmers for over 30 years, and always took an active interest in the welfare of the district. He was Mayor of the borough for about eleven years, and was chairman of the Dock* Trust for nineteen years, and a member of the Harbour Board since 1888. He ie survived by one daughter and three sons.
