CARRIERS' STANDS.
TO BE BEMOYED FBOM THE SQUARE.
At the meeting of the City Council last night the By-laws Committee reported tl\at ihey had considered tho question of cariiers* stands 'in conjunction with tho Tramway Board's request that part of the stand on tho south side of" the Cathedral should bo abolished. Tho, mattpr had received careful consideration, - and tho cohimittee recommended that both carriers- stands bo removed from Cathedral square and that how stands' bo appointipd as under: Oxford terrace, near tho reserve'betweon Gloucester street and Armagh street; LiehfieH street?, along the centre hear Durham street j: Bedford row, along the cejilro; .ftew street, betjreori'. Bfiwwford street and Cashei street east, along the centre; Ma-nehes-tor streetj'olongth© centre between* Gloucester street and Arhiaah street. The comriy recommended that a now bah" stahd 'should be appointed along the centre of Hefeford street from .Colombo: streot, westward; also- the centre bt Gloucester streot- east, of Cfolombo street.. Tho committee also recom-meiad-d-that" a taxi-oah stand- be ap-* pointed along the .centre of Hereford street oast or Coldmbo atreet. Cr. Hyde suggested that tho carriers' stand should be placed along Gloucesstreet oast of Manchester street, instead of along Manchester street, which was a-busy street. / ' Gr.Didugall said tho intention of the committee was to plate the stand by th© kerbing immediately in front of the munioipat buildings. That would leave-oi© roadway clear. ♦ The Mayor said that tho motion apKintiag th© old stands would have to rescinded before they could be done away with.; Personally he did not stt6 why all the carriers should ho taken orit of tho Square.
