Dr. Mac Arthur, S.M., has lieen appointed chairman of the North Island Railway Appeal Board in succession to •Mr H. Eyre Kenny, who has retired on superannuation. Mr C. A. Hickson. Commissioner of xStamps, who is retiring on superannuation, received a presentation from members cf the staff of the department at Wellington yesterday. The Hon. Dr. Findlav (Mims'ter in charge of the department), who made the presentation, spoke appreciatively of Mr Hickson's work, and of his long connection of forty-four years with the service. Mr J. t>. Ritchie. Chief Secretary for Agriculture, has been appointed by the Prime Minister to represent New Zealand at th* International Conference of She?pbreodors, to he held under the auspices of the National Sheepbreeders" Association of England, at the Royal Agricultural Society's Show at •Gloucester, next June. Mr E. Caradus, assistant science master at the Auckland Grammar School, was yesterday apprintod to be one of the assistant masters at Wellington Boys' College. Colonel Knight, commanding the North Island division of the Salvation Army, left Wellington fcr Sydney, yesterday, in charge of a large contingent of officers who are to attend the conference to be held under Commissioner McKie, at' Melbourne, before that, officer leaves t-> take a command in Sweden. Mr L. M. Sandste-n left by the Moar.a on Thursday night for Sydney and Fiji, en route for the United States, where he intends takina up the civil engineering course at the Boston Institute of Technology. Arrivals in town yesterday included:

Lewis (West Coast), and Mr A. Leigliton (Dunedin). Mr J. A. Murdoch, mayor of Kumara, and Mr Joseph Taylor (Greymouth) leave for the West Coast by this morning's train. The teachers and sixth standard scholars of the Aldington School met yesterday afternoon to bid farewell to Mr Morgan, who is leaving to take up the position of assistant master of the Opawa School. Mr Seay, the head master, and Mr Ellison, the chairman of the School Committee, spoke of the excellent work done by Mr Morgan with his sixth standard class and cadet corps. On behalf of tlie pupils. Mr Morgnn was presented with a set of ivorv-handied fish carvers, and on be- i half' of the teachers, with a bronze statuette. The teachers afterwards entertained Mr Morgan at afternoon tea. Yesterday afternoon the scholars and teachers of the St. Albans School assembled to nay good-bye to Miss Hannam, who has'been appointed to a position in the East Christchurch School, and to Mr Morland. who has been selected as head master of the Irwell School. Both were the recipients of handsome presents from their scholars and fellow-teachers, and were wished j every success in their now spheres. ' The "excellent work they have done in the school was commented on both by the School Committee and by tlie teachers, and general regret at losing thorn was expressed. Mr Morland. who is to be married in a few days, was deluged with flowers and rico by the elder girls. At the Primitive Methodist service at. Avlesbury last Sunday afternoon, the Rev. B." Dudley, on behalf of the parents of the Sunday school, presented a travelling rug to Mr J. Belgrave, of Kirwee, the school superintendent, on the Occasion of his silver wedding, and in appreciation of his faithful services to their children in the form of religious instruction during a term of 14 years. Mr J. H. Cooksley has. been elected a member of the- Heathcotc Road Bonrd. for the Hillsborough Ward, and Mr J. T. Read for the Bromley Ward. There are two candidates for the Avon Ward. Mr W. H. Denton and Mr Walter Hill, nnd a poll will be taken on Thursday next. Messrs A. Baxter. D. Hawke, and "John Sknrr have been elected members of tho Oxford Road Board. For the Mandcvillo and Rangiora Road Board. Messrs J. Stevenson, C. Leech, and J. Stalker have been nominated, and this not being more than the required number, they will be declared elected.
