HERRICK'S CITY MISSION
HOME TO BE CLOSED
The annual meeting of subscribers to Herrick's City Mission Home was held in the Scottish Society's Rooms last evening. The Her. J. Mackenzie occupied the chair, and there was a' small attendance. The twentieth annual report was presented. It contained' an announcement that Mrs Herrick desired' to resign, owing to ill-health. She felt that she was physically unfit to continue in xlie position of superintendent any longer. She thanked all friends for the genial sympathy and warm encourage- j ment always given her. j Tho balance-sheet for the year ended March 31st last showed' a credit of £G9 13s 2d. There -were no liabilities, j and the assets were valued at £169 1-3 2:1. The Chairman, in moving that the report and balance-sheet be' adopted, said that Mrs Herrick •was unable to continue in the-position of superintendent, and the work had been so much bound up in her that some subscribers felt that the Home might not be carried on with advantage. It was also felt chat circumstances had? changed. When tho mission was opened there was no other organisation of the kind in Christchurch, T>ut there had l been a great change in that respect. Tho work was being done too great extent by public institutions, and the churches were taking their share. It was felt that the mission might be discontinued without inflicting any serious hardship or disability on those* who had been helped during the past years. After consultation with Mrs Herrick, it had been resolved to recommend that the mission should be closed, and an effort made to recognise the good work done by Mrs Herrick and Mr Ramsay. The motion for the adoption of tlie report was seconded by the Rev. Mr McCallum and carried. The Rev. Mr Purchas said that Mr Hargreaves, who was unable to be present, had intended to move certain motions. He had undertaken to move the motions, with which he sympathised. He moved:—"That in view of Airs Herrick's retirement, and the fact that the work would bo covered by other organisations, the work be discontinued from the end of May." This was agreed to. Mr Purchas then moved: —"That the subscribers place on record their high appreciation of the work of relief carried on for so many years by the late Mr Herrick, and more recently by Mrs Herrick, and that a small committee be appointed to make arrangements for a suitable recognition of tie services of Mrs Herrick and the mission collector, Mr Ramsay." This was seconded by Mr Jameson, and was agreed to. The following were appointed a committee:—The Rev. Messrs Mackenzie and Purchas, Messrs McCrae and Lai ender, Mesdames Jameson and -Vlaling, and Miss Hevwood. Tlie committee were authorised to wind uq the affairs of the Mission, and disooso of the furniture and assets. . Mrs Herrick and Mr Ramsay were informed of tho decision arrivedat by the meeting, and each replied, thankinc the subscribers for the unfailing kindness and consideration extended to them.
