UNIVERSITY OF NEW ZEALAND.

(_■&—SS ASSOCIATION TEL-08-—)

AUCKLAND, January 26. Tho University Senate to-day discussed the report of the Recess Committee on Dr. Starr Jordan's suggestions for degree courses. The Committee recommended that B.A. and B.Sc. courses should bo divided into intermediate and final course—; that an intermediate' examination be taken after one year's terms, and the final after five years; that the intermediate B.A. courso include English, history, Latin or Greek, mathematics, and the usual optional; that the final B.A. course include two courses of two years moro advanced than the intermediate one of one year, tho B.Sc. course to be on similar lines.

Sir Robert Stout said it would mean that a student would take four subject— the first year, and it was absolutely impossible to be successful. Tho scheme was utterly inapplicable to the mass of our s students unless the standard wero lowered.

After threo hours' discussion, a motion to refer tho matter to the Professorial Boards was carried.
