THE CANAL.
_0 TH_! __ITOB O. "THR _____." Sir, —Permit mc to ask all North Canterbury men on the Bth of next month to vote solid for canal supporters in the Harbour Board elections. The whole of Canterbury north of Ashb"rton is, or should be. interested in .*e progress of Christchurch. The development of this city is the only fact that will keep our young men in the province. It will never develop under its present handicap ,and the more it develops and the larger it grows, the better home market docs it become for the country producer. Unless opponents of the canal are prepared to demonstrate that. progress is absolutely illegitimate, it is difficult to understand the attitude they assume. Of course, if a community is never to reach out for better things, is never to attempt to add to its trade, and increase and multiply and do its best in the furtherance of the advancement of the world in general, then these people are rijjht. But the 'facts of creation are against them. There are no two roads—we either advance or co back. etc., _. ADVANCE CANTERBURY.
