Lancaster, third officer; Mr J. Mirrott, chief engineer; Mr H. Irving, second engineer; Mr W. A. Thornton, third engineer; Mr' M. Hastie, fourth' engineer. Th© crew consisted of 40 men. It is believed these aro mostly white. There are also soveral passengers, including two American naval officers and their wives, who wero bound for the United States naval station at Pago Pago, Samoa. Christmas Island, which is about 60 miles in circumference, belongs to the United States. It is situate in latitude S. E. point, Idet; 41min ■ N., longitude 57dcg SOmin West. It was discovered by Captain Cook in 1777. The Aeon was a steel screw steamer 1 of 4221 tons, commanded by Captain Downie, and owned by Messrs Howard, Smith and Co., Ltd., of Melbourne. At the. timo sh© was lost th© vessel was running under the auspices- of Messrs Andrew Weir and Co.'s Australian mail line of cargo steamers, trading between San Francisco ' and New Zealand and Australian ports.
