SUNDAY EVENING CONCERTS.

9 THE CITY COUNCIL'S ATTITUDE. MATTER REFERRED TO BANDS COMMITTEE. Tho question of granting permission to hold regular (Sunday night sacred concerts in Christchurch wtus again considered at tho" mooting oi" tho City Council last night. Tho hon. teoretary of tho South klaud Ikuid Coute.it C-ommittee wrote Uf>kin4s the Council to reoon&ider their decision refusing pennLcsion to hold a soricw of 6uud.iy ovoiiing concerts of a sacred nature in ilia .Uujivity's Theatre, and to make a toiletik>;i in aid ol the iiuids of tho projKMi'd coni/ti>t. ' Ihe writer pointed out that the competitions Hero nek! solely tor tiie purpose of rai-ing the standard of hand iiiumc generaliy, ami increasing tho oirlciciicy of tho players. 'ihe \\ollington L.iirriiuii. \\ ang .nni Garrison, and Canterbury Engiiuvr Bands had obtained permission in tho p.'.vst to hoid similar concerts, and .Sunday evening concerts were cncouragi'd in other centre-. The (XHiimiuee wl-ic quite prepared to submit the to tho Council for approval.

Cr. bape- moved that tho request should be granted. Cr. Oii.y seconded th.o motion.

In reply to Cr. Hyde, Cr. Cooper said he understood that permission had been gr.tnteel -only from time to time, as requests were made.

Cr. Hall said the Council had already refused the request twice, and it did. not seem elii;niii.'d for tho Council then to grant it. The pre*pcr coiir..o would be for the Council to refer the matter to the B.mds Committee to frame conditions for the regulation of tho concerts. There Ma.> a coii-dJ'.-rabie ,!ifferenco of opinion as to the effect of the prop'x.rel toncerts, and it would bo better if the matter were referred to the committee. He moved in that direction. if one request was granted, then others could not bo refuted.

Cr. Gapes then M-ithdrew his motion in f-ivour of the one tiropoo.- tr i Hall.

Cr. Williams objected to the reference of tho matter to tho Bands Committee. The Council had rcfusid the request twice, and there was no re:;-on why it should now grant it. He believed that the concert-?'M-ould involve a certain desecration of the Sabbath.

Cr Hlrde siid that permission had been granted to outride b .nds. and he saw no reason why Christrhurch bands should br* treated elifferently. Cr. Parsons thought that permission should be granted. The motion was then put and carried.
